On this page you can find some of the most frequently asked questions about American passports.

What is the price of a U.S. passport?

The lowest cost of the U.S. Passport Card is $30.00 and for the U.S. Passport Book – $110.00. However the price varies depending on the type of passport you need and how quickly you need it. It may take up to 6 weeks to receive your passport.  You will find the price inside the application pack that best suits your needs.

I have already submitted my documents, and my passport was mailed to me, but I still have not received it

In this case you should contact the National Passport Information center. You will be able to confirm your address and if needed to report the non-receipt of your passport. You should contact the government agency within 90 days of non-receipt, otherwise you will be required to reapply and pay another fee.

What should I do if I lost my passport?

If you cannot find your passport, the first thing to do is file a report with your local police and submit a government to the State Department to invalidate your lost passport. You may apply for a new passport using our application packs. The necessary form is included in the pack.

What is the electronic passport?

The electronic passport, ot the E-passport is the same as the regular passport with the addition of a small chip in the back cover. The chip stores the data on your passport such as your photograph, names, date of birth, number of passport, your digital signature, etc. This technology is used in order to facilitate the use of face recognition technology at ports of entry.

How quickly can I get my US passport?

Processing times vary generally depending on workload. The regular service has a timeline of approximately 4-6 weeks from the time of application, whereas the expedited service will get you a passport within 2 to 3 weeks.

How long my US passport valid for?

Passports for adults (16 and over) are valid for 10 years. If you were less than 16 when you applied for your passport, it will be valid for 5 years.

When should I renew my passport?

The expiry date is indicated on the front page of your passport. You are advised to renew it nine months before the expiration date, since some countries require that your passport has at least a 6-month validity beyond the date of your trip.

I am having difficulty downloading the payment form listed in the Passport Application Pack. What should I do?

You must ensure that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your PC. You must also use Internet Explorer as you browser to successfully download the form. If this fails then you should copy the form and paste it into a Word document, save to your desktop and print off from there.

I do not plan to travel. Should I have a passport?

Maintaining a US passport is generally recommended to people who have family abroad, like vacationing abroad, or have a job that requires international travel. However, having a valid US passport is very useful in cases of emergency travel abroad.

Where can I find instructions about filling out the passport application forms?

We have included complete instructions on filling out the passport application forms in our kits. This will prevent delay of your passport due to incomplete/wrong information.

I have only one blank page in my passport. Will I be able to travel?

Some embassies require you to have at least two blank pages when you apply for a visa. In this case, you can apply for a new passport, or, if your passport is still valid, request additional visa pages.

What should I do in case of a life or death emergency overseas?

You need to appear in person at a passport agency and provide documentation of their emergency. Life and death emergencies involve death or serious illness of your immediate family that will require international travel within 48 hours. You can call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Agency.

What happens to my old passport once I get my new one?

The old passport will be canceled and returned to you together with your new one. You may wish to keep it as a proof of your US citizenship.

I found another person’s lost passport. What should I do?

Should this happen, you should send the found passport to the US Department of State Passport services using this address:

Can I get a passport card instead?

The passport card is designed not a globally recognized travel document as is the traditional passport book. The passport book is the universally recognized document for all international travel.

What is a passport card?

The U.S. Passport Card is an official document that can be used to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry. It cannot be used for international travel by air.

Do children sign their own passports?

Young children under 16 do not sign their passports. One of their parents should print the child’s name and sign the passport with their own name.

Do children under 16 require the consent of both parents and legal guardians in order to apply for a passport?

They do, as of February 2008.

How do I apply for a US passport if I am a naturalized citizen?

Yoy must apply using the same procedure and application forms as US-born citizens. Make sure to include your original naturalization certificate with your application. It will be returned to you with your passport.

What if I am a naturalized citizen?

If you are a naturalized citizen requesting a U.S Passport then the original naturalization certificate must accompany the application for a passport. The naturalization certificate will be return when you receive your new passport.

Is a visa the same thing as a passport?

A visa is permission to enter a country and to remain for a specific period of time. You can obtain a visa before traveling abroad from the embassy or consulate of the countries to which you plan to travel. A Visas are stamped in your passport, therefore a valid passport is required to travel to and from those countries from which the visa is granted.

Can I use an expired passport for emergency travel?

No, an expired passport is not valid for international travel.
